I recently discovered Lush…I know I know, I am so late to the party that the DJ has packed up and gone home! My reasons for avoiding Lush in the past were purely sensory. I just could not stand the smell of the shop…it seemed so perfumed with wave upon wave of strongly-smelling perfume wafting out of the door that I couldn’t even make it inside. After coveting other people’s Lush purchases I just couldn’t stand it any longer and I had to go inside!
It took me two goes, but I did it. The first part of the shop contained all of the strongly-smelling bath products…and as I don’t have a bath they do not interest me. I skipped on straight to the rear of the shop where the makeup and beauty products were situated and this was much more tolerable; I slowly got used to the mildly pungent air. I thought I would purchase a few products from across the beauty range, so here are my first impressions…
Rehab Shampoo: My first impression of this is a bit bleugh. When I first used it, it irritated my scalp on application. On subsequent uses it just stung a bit and left my scalp a bit itchy. The shampoo contains peppermint which may be to blame for the stinging/irritation. I have stopped using this and sadly will not repurchase. 😦
Retread Conditioner: This is a nice light conditioner…despite Lush describing it as ‘heavyweight’. If you want deep conditioning this is not for you (in my opinion), but if you want a light, easy-to-rinse conditioner for regular use then this is perfect. On the down side I do have to use 2-3 times as much of this conditioner as others I normally use so I don’t think it will last that long. Considering the price, I am not likely to repurchase this. 😦
Ultrabalm All-Purpose Balm: Despite the very odd smell I am totally in love with this balm! I can’t describe the smell…it’s just odd, but the texture and results of this wonderful balm are brilliant. I use it on my lips, under my eyes at night, on the dry skin on my feet, elbows and knees…and anywhere else it is needed. It’s brilliant and I will definitely be repurchasing this one forever until the end of time! 🙂
Lip Service Lip Balm: I love love love this lip balm. It has a gorgeous light citrus scent and a nice oily (but not greasy) texture that is great for dry, chapped lips. It can be fiddly to open which is the only downside, but I think I can deal with that. I can’t wait to try the other Lush lip balms…more of these will definitely be on my shopping list. 🙂
Charity Pot Hand and Body Lotion and R&B Hair Moisturiser (sample): The slightly but pleasantly oily hand and body lotion has a mild citrus scent and it is just wonderful for calming my hands after a day of vigorous washing and alcohol gel use. A definite repurchase. 🙂 I haven’t tried the hair moisturiser yet but it smells nice and I have heard nothing but good things about it. I feel that it is something I will use almost as a leave-in hair mask as my hair is fine and I don’t want it to weigh it down. 🙂
Movis Facial Soap: This is another strange-smelling product with a very weird texture. I tend to use it on no-makeup days to cleanse my face as it leaves a bit of an oily residue, which is nice and comfortable particularly when you are not planning on putting foundation on. I actually really like this and will definitely repurchase it when it runs out. 🙂
Ultrabland Cleanser: When I first used this I got it so so so wrong! I am used to cleansing oils that emulsify when washed off and I kinda expected this to do the same. I slapped it all over my face and smoothed it around with my hands to take my makeup off…then I splashed my face with water to rinse it off…and it didn’t rinse off…it just congealed..and the more I splashed and rubbed at it the worse it got. After realising that this comes off much more easily with a wash cloth I have since been more successful. I am still undecided on this product but for now will keep it in my skincare routine. 🙂
Ayesha Fresh Face Mask: This has a 4-week use-by date on it and has to be stored in the fridge. It actually looks like a delicious pate but fortunately no one has attempted to spread it on crackers or toast yet. It’s nice and cooling on the skin when applied and makes my skin feel nice and soft after use. I will be repurchasing this to encourage me in my quest of using a weekly face mask. 🙂
The products aside, my experience in the shop with the staff there was just amazing. On my first visit I got a sample of the R&B Hair Moisturiser as the shop assistant said this was her favourite product and I just had to try it. On my second visit another shop assistant was talking to me about the Movis Facial Soap and he offered me a sample. I decided to buy a chunk of the soap instead and ended up receiving it for free as part of their Pay it Forward initiative.
All of the staff in there were super friendly, at a level more often seen in shops in the US. Not that we are unfriendly here in the UK, but there is more of a ‘fend for yourself’ culture. The staff were also all very knowledgeable about the products and very positive about working for Lush, which was refreshing to hear, and it helped to make my whole shopping experience a pleasure. I will definitely be going back to Lush for more products.
What are your favourite Lush products? Is there anything you think I should try?
