The highlight(ers) of the holidays…

Highlight for the holidays...

I never used to use highlighter! I know, what was I thinking?! Naturally I have seen the error of my ways and for someone who only recently startedΒ highlighting I have quite a collection. I’m not so sure about this ‘strobing’ malarkey…I use a technique I like to call ‘smushing’ where I smush highlighter all over my face until I look pretty! It seems to work well for me. πŸ˜‰ I have a highlighter for every occasion and makeup look. Let’s have a look at my current collection…

Highlight for the holidays...Benefit High Beam

Benefit High Beam Liquid Highlighter

My first ever highlighter was this full-sized version of the pink-tonedΒ Benefit High Beam liquid highlighter. I really struggled with this product as when I put it on my face I always felt that it disrupted the foundation underneath. It’s not something I ever reach for now however my friends who wear lighter bases seem to love this. When I swatch it on my hand it really does beam! If you like liquid cheek products you may really like this.

Highlight for the holidays...Top Shop Glow Cream Highlighter

Top Shop Glow Cream Highlighter in ‘Gleam’

Another cream highlight I have sampled is the Top Shop Glow Highlighter in the shade Gleam (gold-toned). Again I find that this disrupts my foundation but if you mix it into your foundation it gives an awesome all-over glow to your face. It’s the not the most cost-effective way to use this product, but as a way to use it up it’s perfect.

Highlight for the holidays...Makeup Revolution Radiance Palette

Makeup Revolution Radiance Palette

My very first powder highlighter was the Highlight paletteΒ by Makeup RevolutionΒ (shades: peach lights, pink lights, golden lights)Β quickly followed by their Radiance paletteΒ (shades: breathe, exhale, glow). I realised I haven’t used any of them for aaaages, *DUPE ALERT* I think these are pretty similar to the Hourglass ambient lighting powders…suspiciously similar! So why not save your pennies, try them out and see what you think…although if there is a shade you fall in love with I would consider getting the Hourglass version like I did (see below).

Highlight for the holidays...NARS Albatross

NARS Albatross (left)

The NARS Albatross is a light white/gold highlighter is one that has gone unloved in my collection. I got this palette for the blushes and bronzer as this was during my pre-highlighterΒ days…in fact I am not sure this highlighter has done anything more than been swatched on my hand! I will rectify this immediately! *PS, it’s on my face now and I am GLOWING!*

Highlight for the holidays...Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow

Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow

I couldn’t help myself when I purchased the Charlotte Tilbury FilmstarΒ Bronze & Glow palette (light to medium). I will admit that I fell for the stunning packaging and the weighty feel in my hand. The ‘glow’ side of the palette gives a nice soft gold highlight, although it did not blow me away. With all the hype I was expecting to be bathed in the glow of light from the stars in the sky above…but it was not to be! It is however a really daytime-appropriate highlighter although at that price I just can’t bring myself to use it every day.

Highlight for the holidays...PIXI golden-beige highlight

PIXI Golden-Beige Highlight

Pixi golden-beige highlight looks almost identical to the famous MaryΒ Lou Manizer (which I don’t own) and I am totally in love with it. It is my go-to daily highlighter. Unfortunately it is only available in palette formΒ so once it’s gone it won’t be on my re-purchase list. The glow is full-on and smushed on my cheekbones, nose and cupid’s bow it looks really pretty.

Highlight for the holidays...Cindy Lou Manizer

Cindy Lou Manizer

The Balm’s Cindy Lou ManizerΒ  is in my collection. It provides a light glowy pinky blush to my cheeks which is perfect for a more natural (I use that term loosely of course) makeup lookΒ or for work. ItΒ doesn’t really work on my pale skin as a highlight but it is great for providing an all-over ‘I’ve been awake for hours’ look to my skin! This product is great for getting made up without natural lighting available as you can’t overdo it. Just be careful as the product is really crumbly…do not drop it!

Highlight for the holidays...Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder - Dim Light

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder – Dim Light

The Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light is the most recent addition to my collection and I think I have fallen in love with it. The peachy-toned powder is unlike anything I have ever applied to my face. It is so finely milled that there is no caking or obvious powder residue. I use it all over my face and the light it brings is like I have beenΒ lit from within…it is trulyΒ stunning! Although there are dupes available (see above), they do not replace the real thing. I have asked Santa for some more products from this collection…fingers crossed!
