I have always loved red lips, it’s one colour I’ve never shied away from. 🙂 If you have the right red you will always look fabulous and trust me, there is a red for every occasion! I decluttered my lip products last year so this selection is a combination of the reds that made the cut and also some newbies. The reds in my collection range from super bright statement reds to softer wearable-for-most pinky-reds. Just looking at them all in this pic makes me smile but be warned, not all red lipsticks were created equal!
Drugstore – I Heart Makeup Lip Lava in Firestorm, KIKO Intensely Lavish shade 04, Revlon Ultra HD in Gladiolus, L’Oreal Colour Riche in Liya’s Pure Red and Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet in Frambourjoise.
Best matte red – Five lipsticks fall into this category; both MACs, L’Oreal Colour Riche, Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet and Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution. If I had to choose one…it’s so hard to choose just one…but if I did I would choose MAC Russian Red as it feels great on the lips, has a fabulous bold colour and has great staying power without the drying effect of the retro matte MAC Ruby Woo.
Most pigmented red – NARS Audacious, L’Oreal Colour Riche, KIKO Intensely Lavish, both MACs and Clio Lipnicure are all super pigmented but the winner is…NARS Audacious Annabella with its one-swipe highly-pigmented opaque coverage. It looks great and feels great, what more can you want?
Longest lasting red – Both MACs, L’Oreal Colour Riche, NARS Audacious and KIKO Intensely Lavish all have long-lasting formulas. Out of all of them MAC Ruby Woo lasts the longest although your lips might hate you for it. The retro matte formula is super SUPER matte and quite drying. I always put it over a lip primer and carry a lip balm with me to add a bit of moisture onto my lips as they risk turning prune-like before the night is out.
Least staying power – I Heart Makeup Lip Lava, Revlon Ultra HD and Tom Ford (*gasp*) all fall into this category. Cue tears and maybe the odd tantrum or two! Why Tom…whyyyyyyyy?! 😦
Most comfortable to wear – Five of the reds are super comfortable to wear; Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution, KIKO Intensely Lavish, Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet, NARS Audacious and L’Oreal Colour Riche. The most comfortable formula for me is NARS Audacious Annabella with its light non-sticky non-drying formula. I almost forget I am wearing a lipstick when I wear this. 🙂
Best liquid lipstick – Of the three in my collection (Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet, Clio Lipnicure & I Heart Makeup Lip Lava) I really like the Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet in Frambourjoise formula, texture, application and longevity.
Best everyday red – Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution, Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet and KIKO Intensely Lavish all have great everyday reds. If I had to choose one I would choose Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution in Lost Cherry as it can be applied subtly or built up if required. The muted cherry red shade adds a pop of colour but nothing that would be out-of-place in the office.
Most likely to bleed – Both the Revlon Ultra HD and Tom Ford lipsticks are bleeders, which makes me cry just a little bit. The Revlon lipstick is really hard to apply with its flat tip and the Tom Ford one is just too bleeding expensive to have this problem…pun intended…although I am not laughing…I am crying… (*sob*). 😦 Yes you can wear a lip liner but this also has to be re-applied for every re-application (ideally you need to take it all off and start again)…no whipping your lippy out for a quick on-the-go freshen up with these ones.
Best without a lip liner – This is hands down the NARS Audacious lipstick in Annabella no contest! No primer or lip liner is needed with this little beauty. I love the bright red highly-pigmented colour and the smooth application. There is no bleeding and it’s easy to apply without the guidance of a lip liner.
Most satisfying packaging – KIKO, Charlotte Tilbury and NARS have all nailed the packaging game! Both KIKO and NARS lipsticks have magnetic closures which satisfyingly clunk into place and also have the added bonus of attracting lost hair grips in my handbag makeup bag! The Charlotte Tilbury bullet doesn’t clunk, but it’s shiny and gold with a vintage edge which I have to say I do like whipping out to apply in public.
My drugstore pick – The L’Oreal Colour Riche Laya’s Pure Red is an amazing lipstick and stands up well against its higher-end counterparts. The packaging is great and high quality, the colour and application are fabulous and it wears well. If you want to save your pennies you can’t go wrong with this!
Best red lipstick – If I had to choose one and only one red lipstick I would choose NARS Audacious Annabella. I cannot praise this particular lipstick and also the NARS Audacious formula enough! It’s not cheap, although it’s not the most expensive (I’m looking at you Tom!) and to be honest I have bought so many disappointing drug store reds over the years that add up to way more than this one little beauty.
What are your favourite reds? Are there any out there that you think I really neeeeeed to try?
